About Us

Trillium, a versatile instrumental trio that plays a wide range of musical styles, is composed of Melanie Sobotka, flutist and vocalist; Janice Stover, pianist and organist; and Amanda Tombarelli, violinist. Formed in 2005 and based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, their varied repertoire has led them to such diverse performances as the York Summer Festival, Music in Market Square, Portsmouth, gallery openings and wedding ceremonies and receptions in Maine, New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts. Although classically trained, these musicians delight in playing many styles of music, from Handel to jazz standards to celtic and pop. They surprise audiences with the addition of Irish whistle, fiddling, varied sounds of the electric keyboard or pipe organ when available. They are able to play acoustically indoors or outdoors with their amplification system.



Melanie Sobotka Flute, Whistles & Vocals
Ms. Sobotka studied flute at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. She has both played the flute and sung extensively with several groups in the New York metropolitan area, as well as in Maine and New Hampshire. Notably, she was a member of the Masterwork Chorus, performing several times at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. Ms. Sobotka performs regularly with the Tim Janis Ensemble and works with Mr. Janis preparing choral arrangements and recording background vocals for his CDs. She also arranges and transcribes music professionally and prepared several choral scores for the off-broadway production of "Stand for Tomorrow." She teaches flute and piano at her studio in Maine.


Janice Stover Piano & Organ
Ms. Stover studied music at Wheaton College and Gordon College in Wenham, MA, graduating with a degree in organ performance. She has had a varied career in accompanying at the piano and organ, singing, acting, choral directing and church music administrating. She is the organist at the First Baptist Church of Portland, ME, and teaches private piano in Maine. She currently studies organ with Ray Cornils, the Civic Organist of Portland, ME.


Amanda Tombarelli Violin
Ms. Tombarelli began classical violin training at the age of six. Over the years she has played in several ensembles and orchestras including the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony, the Mary Washington College Orchestra, and the University of New Hampshire Chamber Orchestra. She has accompanied The Seacoast Singers and Portsmouth Pro Musican.
